Henryk Liskiewicz at the Iyengar Yoga studio Victoria Street, Paddington. This editorial was first published in the SydneyStandard July print edition.
After a journey around the world, my partner Henryk Liskiewicz and I have found a space for our yoga school in Paddington. We teach Iyengar Yoga.
What is Iyengar Yoga?
The ancient yogic texts say that yoga is for all, but it does not mean one-size fits all. How we work with young healthy students is drastically different from how we work with someone in the remedial class.
We study regularly with the Iyengar family in Pune, India. B.K.S. Iyengar, Guruji to his students, gave such challenging and often very dynamic sequences in the advanced classes, however, he always insisted on alignment and conscious, intelligent movement. This is why it is attractive to professional athletes and dancers, as it is to those dealing with chronic injuries or illness.
Although Henryk and I have very different backgrounds, the discipline and methodology of Iyengar Yoga instantly made sense to us. I had years or 'barre work' in ballet before I was given my first pair of point shoes. Henryk had years of physical, technical and psychological training before he flew his first jet.
What really sets Iyengar Yoga apart though is the deepness of the practice. We learn to practice and then teach all variety of poses; standings, forward extensions, back bends, inversions, twists and balances. We offer a variety of class types and levels, so that students work appropriately and understand the foundations before moving to the more advanced poses. At first we do many repetitions of poses, giving the chance for correction and understanding, then we learn to STAY.
When you stay 20 minutes in a headstand you must have learnt how to properly align yourself and you must have built the physical strength to stay, but most of all you must have learnt to be with you. This is meditation in action. You stay still, you stay quiet, you stay conscious and you learn to be with YOU.
It is this internal stability, as well as the physical benefits that help you navigate both the successes and stresses in life.
We are so excited and blessed to have the opportunity to share this teaching with others. Find out more here - www.iyogaspace.net
